A big thank you to everyone who participated in the competition. After these many years of poetry, we were surprised at the innovation and freshness poets had to offer and we are glad to be able to play a part in keeping it alive. The Golden Sparrow Poetry Prize 2011 would not have been a success without your inspiring poems.  Participants from almost every continent had verse to offer. We received a total of 570 entries and it was a pleasure to read each and every one of them. Read the rest of this entry »

Ariana D. Den Bleyker: The Conquest of Bread

In Contest, Finalists - 2011, Poetry on November 18, 2011 at 5:04 pm

Ariana D. Den Bleyker is a Pittsburgh native that currently resides in a small town in New York where she is a wife and mother of two. Earning a B.A. in English, she is a graduate of William Paterson University. She is passionate about poetry and writing because it speaks to her so much that she’s been known to consider writing her part-time job. She draws much of her energy from her own life experiences, late night musings, and reading and writing lots and lots of poetry. She especially loves when a poem she’s written is fortunate enough to be spared from the box where drafts go to die. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her family and every once in a while sleeps. It is her dream to become the editor of her own literary journal one day. Her poetry was most recently featured in scissors and spackle, Stone Highway Review, The Homestead Review, Heavy Hands Ink, among others, and is forthcoming in Grey Sparrow Press, Lady Ink Magazine and Burnt Bridge. Her chapbook, Forgetting Aesop, was recently published by the editors of scissors and spackle and is available for purchase at http://www.scissorsandspackle.com.

Howie Good: Muse

In Contest, Finalists - 2011, Poetry on November 18, 2011 at 5:02 pm

Howie Good, a journalism professor at SUNY New Paltz, is the author of the full-length poetry collections Lovesick (Press Americana, 2009), Heart With a Dirty Windshield (BeWrite Books, 2010), and Everything Reminds Me of Me (Desperanto, 2011), as well as numerous print and digital poetry chapbooks, including most recently Love Dagger from Right Hand Pointing. As far as my poetic aspirations go, I try to convey in my poems not so much what happened as how what happened feels.
