Sweet Disconnection

In Poetry on November 7, 2011 at 5:28 am

Seriously,

with a brow knotted with random words,

he looked at me.

There was no pulse

behind his eyes

which might have explained

what he meant with that

lime gaze.

With a recoil, my stomach

leaping back like a spring,

I flashed a smile.

A toothy shield glinting in the sun.

What an unusual morning

for this stand-off.

No weapons, not even

voiced blades.

Just that look you wielded,

just that shield,

already trembling in my grip.
